Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is administered by placing a device around the front of the skull which then sends a magnetic pulse to the brain. The device is not implanted; rather it is positioned temporarily by a technician and sits comfortably on the outside of the skull. The device holds a large electronic magnet which creates and distributes the pulse. It is usually shaped like a figure-eight wand or a concave wedge.
