TMS has been studied and researched extensively for the last two decades and has just recently been released to the medical market. But what is it?
TMS Therapy is a therapy designed for the treatment of certain neurological conditions, specifically Major Depressive Disorder. It is mostly intended for those who have not achieved a response from antidepressant medication or for those who have suffered side effects from antidepressant medications.
Whew, that’s a mouthful. But what does it all mean? And what exactly is TMS? Most people have never heard of this treatment, let alone understand what it actually does.
Medically speaking, TMS is considered an effective treatment option that reduces the symptoms of certain neurological conditions in adults. It is also often prescribed to patients who have not improved with traditional treatments. This includes patients who have not benefited from medication or psychotherapy. However, TMS is increasingly being seen as a first line treatment, and more doctors are prescribing TMS Therapy before prescribing medications or alongside medications.
The “non-invasive” part of TMS Therapy means TMS has very minimal negative effects on your body and doesn’t upend your daily schedule. There are no surgeries and TMS does not require any anesthesia or sedation. Most often, TMS is administered right at the TMS prescribing psychiatrist’s or doctor’s office. In fact, all a patient has to do is sit in a chair and relax.
The “non-systemic” part of TMS Therapy means that nothing enters your blood stream. There are no shots or drugs administered. There is no need for chemicals or substances to circulate throughout the body. This is an important distinction to make because it means that TMS does not impair your abilities. In fact, TMS is perhaps the least intrusive form of depression therapy available.
As of this writing, TMS has only been cleared as a therapy for Major Depression and Migraines accompanied by auras. However TMS is actively being explored in clinical trials as a therapy for other ailments such as bi-polar disorder, OCD, schizophrenia, and even PTSD.
